About Meghalaya
Meghalaya, the "abode of clouds", is known for living root bridges, the clear Umngot river at Dawki, Mawlynnong village and some of India's highest waterfalls around Cherrapunji (Sohra). Shillong, the capital, is a relaxed hill town of cafés and viewpoints.
Most Meghalaya tours start from Guwahati and spend 4–6 days between Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong, with an optional trek to the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat.
Best time to visit
October to April for clear views and boating at Dawki; June to September for waterfalls at full flow
How to reach
Fly or take a train to Guwahati. Shillong is about 100 km (around 3 hours) by road, and Cherrapunji another 55 km. Shillong airport at Umroi has a few direct flights.
