Best time to visit Meghalaya, month by month

Meghalaya means “abode of the clouds”, and the weather decides almost everything about your trip: which waterfalls are worth the walk, whether the Dawki boats are running, and how long the drive from Guwahati takes.

October to April: clear rivers and easy roads

This is the most comfortable season. Skies are mostly clear, roads are dry and the Umngot river at Dawki is at its clearest, which is when you see the famous “floating boat” photos. Nights in Shillong and Cherrapunji get cold from December to February, so pack a warm layer.

May: green and warming up

Pre-monsoon showers start to fill the falls again. Days are pleasant, and it is a good month if you want greenery without the heaviest rain.

June to September: the monsoon

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are among the wettest places on earth. The waterfalls are spectacular, but expect heavy rain, fog on the viewpoints and occasional landslides that slow the roads. The Dawki river turns muddy, so boating is usually paused.

Want the waterfalls and the clear river in one trip? Aim for late October or early November.

Our suggestion

  • First visit: November to March.
  • Monsoon lovers: July and August, with an extra buffer day.
  • Honeymoon: October or April, for mild days and fewer crowds.
